GEO for e-commerce: make your product data readable to AI
GEO (generative engine optimization) means helping AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini understand and cite you correctly. For an online store, that comes down to product data: Google's AI shopping reads your Merchant Center data, and a product feed helps ChatGPT describe your products accurately. Nothing guarantees a recommendation, but complete, correct and current data is the part you control.
What GEO is, and how it differs from SEO
The term comes from the 2023 research paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (KDD 2024), which studied how content can show up more often in answers written by AI search engines.
| SEO | GEO for e-commerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank high in a list of links | Be understood and mentioned inside an AI answer |
| What gets read | Web pages | Web pages plus product data (Merchant Center, product feeds) |
| What to watch | Rankings and clicks | Mentions, citations and visits from AI assistants |
Where AI shopping gets your product data
- Google AI Mode and Gemini: read your Merchant Center product data. Free listings can appear across Search, Gemini, YouTube, Shopping, Images and Lens, on by default but never guaranteed. See the Merchant Center guide.
- ChatGPT shopping: live for U.S. users only. Results are chosen by ChatGPT and are not ads; a feed is optional because ChatGPT also crawls websites. See how to get products into ChatGPT.
- Shopify stores: agentic storefronts send your catalog to ChatGPT, AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta. See the Shopify guide.
5 steps to GEO-ready product data
- Check what AI can't answer. Ask the questions shoppers ask — who it's for, how to use it, how it compares — and see what your data can't answer.
- Get the basics right. Brand, category, price, availability and identifiers (never guess a GTIN).
- Add the details AI can quote. In Merchant Center that means
product_highlight,product_detailand the AI Mode attributes Google named, such asquestion_and_answerandrelated_product. - Back every claim. New specs or "good for" statements should come from the manufacturer or your own product pages, and must match the landing page.
- Keep it current. Update price and stock when they change; ChatGPT feeds should send a full snapshot at least daily.
AI Catalog covers steps 1, 2 and 4: it scans your feed, fills in brand, category and descriptions from your own data, and every change cites a source and needs your approval.
How to measure GEO
- Visits from AI assistants: in Google Analytics, sessions whose source is chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com or copilot.
- Google AI insights: since September 16, 2026, Merchant Center shows AI Mode and AI Overviews share of voice for organic traffic in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the US.
- Spot checks: ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your shoppers ask, and note whether your products and facts come back correctly.
Questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. AI assistants also read web pages, so SEO basics still matter; for e-commerce GEO adds product data on top.
Can GEO guarantee AI recommends my products?
No. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping results are chosen independently and are not ads, and Google doesn't guarantee free listings appear.
Can stores outside the US do GEO today?
ChatGPT shopping is live for U.S. users only, but the same product data also feeds Google Merchant Center, so fixing it pays off either way.
Do I need to buy ads for GEO?
No. ChatGPT shopping results are not ads; ads are a separate program.
